Wondering how I got into Wrestling? Get to know a little bit about me by reading on...
I was born and raised in East Kent, England. As a child, I was rather shy. Two things happened to me in my childhood that sparked off a future interest in wrestling.
Firstly, I had a stuffed cat - child-sized, called Sylvester, who I used to enjoy trying to wrestle. This was top secret from my parents, and I had to lock myself in my room, while they were in the garden or in another part of the house. I was really terrified of being found out.
Then later, I can't remember my age, but probably between 8 and 11, I was at my grandparents' house, and a TV programme was on with ladies wrestling in bikinis. My grandmother changed the channel very swiftly, but the image was forever imprinted on my mind. I have often wondered since what programme that was. As I grew up, my teenage fantasy became being a female wrestler. In my dreams, I would run away and go to “America” and work in live events with a big audience cheering…….
In reality, I was too shy to do anything of the sort. I studied hard at school, and went to university, and got a degree in music (classical composition). After graduation, I decided to go and live in Tokyo. I only meant to live out there for a year, but it ended up being more than four. I really came out of myself when I lived there. I met all sorts of people from around the world, and I made some new good friends, whom I confided my dream of becoming a wrestler to. They encouraged me to get over my inhibitions, and get out there and meet some Japanese female wrestlers who could train me. Japan is a great place to get started in female wrestling - the scene there must be the best in the world. Although I had not previously been a particularly sporty person, I found that I picked up the holds pretty easily, and that wrestling came naturally to me. So I started taking part in wrestling events and also made a couple of videos.
Just as I was getting started in Japan, personal circumstances came about which meant that I had to return to England (July 2004). In the autumn of 2004, I decided to investigate what the UK wrestling scene was all about, and got some refresher training. I started taking part in events, and making videos too. In 2005, I have been traveling back and forth between the UK and the US a lot, doing wrestling work.
I have gained a lot of experience in three continents, in a relatively short period of time, and would really like to contribute to the UK female vs female wrestling scene in. One is by helping other UK women become interested in wrestling as a way to keep fit and have fun, and therefore for wrestling to be perceived as something female-friendly, and not as something seedy or pornographic. This is a pretty tough barrier to break through, but I would like to provide a positive role model for other women who are potentially interested in wrestling, and I'm not going to give up! If the Japanese can do it (and Mexicans! Great wrestling scene there too), so can we! |
